Product Description

WC-Ni Non-Magnetic Alloy Vacuum Pump Seals Corrosion-Resistant Seal Rings for Aggressive & Clean Environments
Product Overview: Beyond Standard Seal Materials

Vacuum pump seals face some of the harshest conditions in industrial machinery—chemical vapors that eat through conventional materials, abrasive particles that accelerate wear, and stringent cleanliness requirements that rule out standard lubricants.

Most tungsten carbide seals use cobalt (Co) binder, which provides excellent wear resistance but suffers from two fundamental limitations: high magnetic permeability that interferes with sensitive instruments and poor corrosion resistance in aggressive chemical environments.

Our WC-Ni Non-Magnetic Alloy Vacuum Pump Seals are engineered to overcome both. By replacing cobalt with nickel as the binder phase, these seals deliver magnetic neutrality and superior chemical resistance, while maintaining the exceptional hardness and wear resistance that make tungsten carbide the industry standard for mechanical seal faces.

Why WC-Ni for Vacuum Pump Seals?

The seal faces in a vacuum pump are the primary barrier between the evacuated chamber and the external environment. They must prevent gas and liquid leakage (often down to ≤10⁻⁶ Pa level) while withstanding friction, chemical attack, and thermal stress.

Material Characteristics: The Nickel Advantage
1. Superior Corrosion Resistance

Unlike cobalt-bonded grades that corrode in acidic environments, WC-Ni seals offer excellent resistance to chemical attack:

  • Oil refineries and petrochemical plants: resists hydrocarbon and sulfur compounds
  • Fertilizer plants and pharmaceutical applications: withstands exposure to ammonia and amine-based media
  • Mining and pulp mills: tolerates high acidity and particulate-laden fluids
2. True Non-Magnetic Performance (μ < 1.002)

By utilizing nickel as the binder, the seal material is completely free of ferromagnetic elements:

  • Zero magnetic signature: No interference with sensitive semiconductor metrology
  • No ferrous particle attraction: Eliminates contamination risk in clean manufacturing
  • MRI and nuclear compatibility: Essential for sensitive measurement environments
3. Exceptional Hardness and Wear Resistance

WC-Ni hardness consistently reaches 89-92 HRA (approx. 1,600-1,900 HV), with density of 14.8-15.0 g/cm³:

  • 10-50x wear life compared to carbon or carbon-graphite seals
  • Dimensional stability maintains micron-level sealing over millions of cycles
  • High compressive strength (>4,000 MPa) withstands high differential pressures
4. High-Temperature and High-Speed Capability

WC-Ni carbides are recommended for mechanical seals operating under high pressure, high speed, high temperature, corrosive media, and media containing solid particles.

Why Use WC-Ni in Vacuum Pump Seals? Application-Driven Reasoning
1. Chemical and Corrosive Environments

Industry trend: increasing use of aggressive chemistries in semiconductor etch chambers and pharmaceutical reactors. WC-Ni seals resist chemical attack where cobalt alternatives fail.

2. Oil-Free and Clean Systems

Industry trend: growth in dry pumping systems for semiconductor fabrication. Non-magnetic WC-Ni seals maintain system purity while preventing magnetic contamination.

3. High-Temperature Processes

Industry trend: advanced vacuum furnaces and thermal processing extend operating temperatures. WC-Ni seals maintain mechanical properties at elevated temperatures.
